June

June 5th we held Field Day and our Family Picnic. We were so glad it stopped raining and that God gave us a sunny day...but, it was sure hot and humid! Thank you to all the parents that helped Mrs. Webber make the day fun and special for the kids. Children competed for prizes and ribbons, then their families joined them for a picnic!

May

Welcome to the Haymarket Day Spa....Kindergarten style!! What a fun day was held by all of our moms and kids, as we celebrated Mother's Day in a special way. Each mom had a personal stylist for the day, and then enjoyed creme puffs, strawberries, cookies and punch. It was such an honor to fuss over our mothers! Enjoy the photos below to remember this day...

March

Our Kindergarten Staff gets into Seuss week.... check out Mrs. Ring as the Cat in the Hat, and our Team K teachers as 'Thing 0 and Thing 1' and celebrating One Fish, Two Fish day.

January

In January we learned about winter, Martin Luther King, did ice experiments, finished 1st semester enrichment classes and began reading groups. The highlight of the month was our International Luncheon..check out the great photos! Much thanks to the wonderful parent involvement and participation, making this a spectacular event!
In Mrs. Burns' class we studied ice. We played a game to help us learn how ice melts, and what makes it melt faster. Here is Alexandra holding her ice cube. And here is Mason, adding salt to his ice cube. Part of the game called for some lucky participants to drop the ice cube down their shirts...brrrr!

Our International Luncheon featured all 12 countries we studied this first semester of Kindergarten. The big room was set up with lunch tables for the children, and surrounded by tables full of food, artifacts and souvenirs from each country. The Abeka Curriculum has us spend about 3 weeks on our country, America followed by a weekly theme on 11 other countries including: Israel, Netherlands, England, Peru, Japan, China, Kenya, Mexico, Australia, Italy and Germany. This concludes our Social Studies units for the year.
Michael checks out food from Mexico! Food from England included cheddar cheese, scones and homemade shortbread! The Italy table was a big hit with pizza, rigatoni and gelato!

Jaden and his mom show off their table from Kenya. We enjoyed plantains, fruit kebobs and fried dough. Jaden's mom also sang to us a song that mothers from Kenya sing to their children. The table from China included potstickers, mandarin oranges, fortune cookies and chopsticks! America... served... can you guess? Apple pie and ice cream...and McDonalds!!

December

December was busy with holiday crafts, the Christmas story, our Christmas program called "The Best Present of All" and making baby Jesus out of socks. We enjoyed ending the month with a trip on the Polar Express, too! If anyone has some good Christmas program photos, please email them to the school. Thanks
Mrs. Shaw's class used their imaginations and the wood blocks to create a stable for their baby Jesus socks. Mrs. Leake's class shows off all the pajamas they wore on the Polar Express. Conductor Shaw gets us all aboard for our Polar Party!
Halle made an adorable angel in the Kindergarten Christmas Program.

Mystery Readers are a big hit in Kindergarten and a place for parents to volunteer! We have had parents come in dressed in funny costumes, or disguised so much that their own children didn't recognize them. Check out some of great volunteer mystery readers!

Enrichment Classes

Our Kindergarten students have the opportunity to extend their school day for an hour and add some special classes. This year we offered a drama class called Curtain Calls, Gymnastics, Spanish 1 & 2, Young Rembrandt's Drawing Course, Kinder Kickit Soccer , Mad Science and Daisy Girl Scouts. Curtain Calls learned a story each week, performed it with minimal props and learned many acting and performing cues and techniques that ended with a performance of 2 stories for the parents (see the photos below). Gymnastics worked on stretching, basic skills, tumbling, balance beam and bars, all provided by Capital Gymastics.(photos of their closing performance for parents will be up at the end of the school year). Spanish Class introduces songs, vocabulary, general conversation, family roles and playing games in Spanish. The children really enjoyed learning Jesus Loves Me in Spanish and performing it at the International Luncheon. Young Rembrandt's students learned drawing techniques to create their own masterpiece each week. They learned about symmetry, overlap, patterns, placement, proportion and cartooning. Kinder Kickit Soccer was a fun program of basic skills and teamwork. Coach Ron and Coach Mac make the learning fun! Daisy scouts meets twice a month and enjoyed learning together about being good citizens. Mad Science comes to our school for the first time this year (2nd semester) with 16 weeks of fun experiments for kids!

Spanish students with Mrs. MacGowan (Spanish teacher) sing at the International Luncheon The children worked on the Gingerbread boy...here's Carmela the wolf, and Reagan the Gingerbread boy. Our Curtain Call performers with Mrs. Elaine Shaw of Rainbow Entertainment Group.
On Tuesdays you will find 20 of our K students enjoying experiments and learning about all kinds of exciting science concepts. They have made a volcano erupt, worked with dry ice, learned about acids and bases, liquids, solids and gasses, static electricity and making model rockets! Our 'Mad Science' guy is Aaron and he sure makes it fun and funny for our kids! They love it!!
Mad Scientists from Kindergarten spent 2 weeks on model rocketry, and built their own rockets.
